MtG: 8th Edition?

I remember when Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, and Revised were a lot to keep track of. Now I have to go see what’s included in the 8th Edition set.

The Cheat is to the limit…

Wired’s got an interview with the HomestarRunner crew up. Even selling 300 pieces of merchandise a day, I can’t see how they make a living, but I sure hope they’re able to keep at it.

Copperhead

If you happen to own a copy of Dungeon Siege, then you should check out Copperhead - a very slick-looking sci-fi total conversion using the Siege Engine. Looks great!

Sopranos finale: Just kidding!

David Chase was apparently only joking when he said that Season 5 of the HBO crime drama The Sopranos would be its last. Season 6 is officially a reality.

Battlefield: 1942 news

The ever-popular (and extremely compelling) Desert Combat mod for BF1942 has made v0.38 available for download.

Additionally, EA has announced that there will be a sequel to BF1942 (now there’s a surprise) that’s simply entitled Battlefield: Vietnam.

Jobs, Bezos, and Segway

This is more of a general “tech” story than a computing story, and I really don’t have any witty or insightful commentary to add - I just liked the article and wanted to post it (even though it’s been making the rounds).

It’s fascinating for its glimpse of some of the most storied personalities in the tech industry, and the business suggestions (and rationale behind them) made at the meeting described in this article are also worth thinking about. A good read, period.

Yeah. Taxing video games and television commercials will go far in solving the “obesity problem.” I resent the implication that playing video games leads to obesity. Asshole.

Retro PC gaming

I’ve been meaning to post about The Underdogs site for a while, so to complete today’s trifecta of gaming posts I thought now’d be as good a time as any.

Warning #1: This site will cause you to experience pop-up ads.
Warning #2: Make sure you read The Underdogs’ description of what they’re all about. Particularly, take note of this comment (emphasis mine):

We believe that providing games that have been abandoned by their publishers, while technically illegal, is a valuable service to the gaming community because these games are in danger of disappearing into obscurity, and their copyright holders no longer derive any revenues from them.

If that doesn’t daunt you, then you should go ahead and indulge in some true gaming classics. My personal picks:

Command HQ. If not the first multiplayer real-time strategy game, then certainly the first RTS I ever played. Still in my top 5 strategy games of all time, despite the EGA graphics that make Desiree puke. Added bonus: it’s the brainchild of the rediculously gifted Dani Bunten.

Gearheads. Genre-defying puzzle/board/strategy/action game. Simple (only 5 keys are required to play), addictive, elegant, fun.

Check it out and find some of your old favorites!
