Miscellaneous gaming stuff
To collect all of the gaming tidbits I’ve seen on the web, in e-mail, and in IM for review over the weekend:
- A potentially huge DOOM 3 performance tweak on this PlanetDOOM thread (thanks to my brother-in-law)
- 7 “mods” for DOOM 3 including 32-player deathmatch and co-op (need to see if there’s a better download location)
- A massive 30-minute movie showing off various aspects of the HL2 engine-powered Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines (discussed and linked to in this Gamespy article)

Thanks. I’ll definitely have to try that performance tweak out since I have a gig of ram.
I picked up D3 last night and even on my 2+ year old rig running an AMD XP2000+, 1 GB RAM, 15k RPM SCSI drive, SB Audigy Platinum, and ATI 9800XT (the only upgrade I’ve done since I built the machine), the game ran well at 1280x1024. A light choppiness here and there but hopefully the tweak will smooth that out.
I haven’t tried multiplayer yet to compare performance.
D3 is pretty cool so far though. It’s like playing in a haunted house.

Beware that co-op mod… found this in a forum today:
Perhaps hold off until it can be really checked out.

Thanks for the heads-up CF… I’ll wait for a “cleaner” co-op mod.

I’ve made it up to the control tower so far in Doom 3. The performance tweak seems like it might have made it smoother, but it’s hard to tell, it wasn’t bad to begin with.
I really like the graphics in this game, it makes you almost feel like you are there, and the effects are just amazing and freaky. But they could add more depth to the activity in the story line. It’s becoming a lot of run around and kill everything in sight, occasionally push a button on a computer screen, repeat, and you don’t even really have to think about it… You’re pretty much lead along. The most challenging puzzle is managing your health and ammo. But I guess that’s in keeping with the Doom style.
