Just in time
Here’s an interesting tidbit - some hosting companies (including Pair, Total Choice, and TextDrive) are turning off their users’ Moveable Type weblogs because the combination of Moveable Type + MT-Blacklist + comment spam is effectively causing a denial of service issue on shared hosts, consuming massive amounts of memory and jacking the IO wait up to the point where these shared resources are unusable by any customers.
Looks like we made the switch to WordPress just in time, especially with ColdForged’s anti-comment spam plugin recommendation.
Now if only I could get the new index.php and stylesheet done…

Just to make a correction because it’s an important one, TotalChoice Hosting (TCH) is not, and has not turned off people’s MT weblogs. As stated in the article, TCH had some problems there with the comment spam (TCH has thousands of MT users), but we have been working hard to work with the users and add some new techniques for blocking comment spam before it hits the weblog scripts. So far, those techniques appear to be working well. We did temporarily disable the commenting function in some large blogs so we could restore the server loads, but only long enough to get a server side solution in place (few hours at worse)… all those blogs’ commenting has been restored.
The point about MT is accurate though… it’s commenting and blacklisting functions are very resource intensive, and can be problematic on shared hosts.
