Google infrastructure
An interesting* article about Google’s server infrastructure architecture; talks at a high-level (i.e. no “secret sauce” is revealed) about how their servers are organized, why they took this approach, and at an even higher level about the problems they have to deal with as a result (although, of course, no solutions to those problems are suggested). I would have loved to see more detail, of course, and had more networking and storage - particularly their custom filesystem, which is reportedly very innovative - discussed, but still a good read.
*To me: interesting. To most: dull.

I’ don’t find this dull at all. What I don’t understand or at least wasn’t able to glean from the paper is how are they replicating data across individual commodity based pc’s in a cluster and even worse, how are they replicating data across geographically diverse clusters? Maybe its in the paper and I just missed it (it might be the chardonney;)

You’re right - it’s not in the paper. Other companies would approach this type of wide-area replication at the application layer (e.g. using DB2 or Oracle replication) if volatility is low, or at the storage layer (e.g. SAN-to-SAN replication) if volatility is high.
For some reason, I seem to recall reading somewhere that (at least within a single geographic location) Google’s doing neither and addressing it at the OS level, with a network filesystem of their own creation - sort of like their own custom storage grid. It’s possible that this network file system handles site-to-site replication as well, but there may be a different solution to that problem.
